About photographer Achim Schwarze
I'm the German writer, graphic artist and photographer Achim Schwarze. Since 1981 I regularly spend the winters in Sri Lanka. I now live in my house with a very large garden (and growing plant collection) in the south west of the island.
During the season I write books, produce cartoons and make countless photographs.
Sri Lanka is
so full of beauty! It's my intention to share some of the outstanding
attractions of Sri Lanka with you. The CD on the Botanic Gardens is the
first in a series of photo CDs that I'm working on.
As a writer I know that it's almost impossible to get a photo book published
that focuses on a speciality like the Royal Botanic Garden of Peradeniya
(Kandy, Sri Lanka). In fact you hardly find more than one or two small
photos of this great location in print publications.
Also a book print isn't able to show the true colors of many of the most
beautiful plants - whereas the PC monitor can display it.
That's why I decided to photograph and produce a state of the art photo
CD. In 2003 and 2004 I spent more than 10 days hoping for good light in
the Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya. From my more than 4,000 photos I selected
the best 900 for this photo CD.
Like for a high quality picture book production I processed each of the
photos to tune it to look exactly as the eye would see the motive. I produced
an additional 900 enlargements to show you the spectacular details of
some plants or perspectives.
All of the over 1700 final pictures on the CD are done as high resolution
JPGs that you can view on your PC (by far the best result) using any viewer
software - just like you do with your own digital photos. On Windows XP
you can do your slide show with the inbuilt "Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer". The size 1000 x 750 perfectly fits the most popular
monitor resolution (1024 x 768). The pictures can also be viewed with
many DVD players.
